Two Hikes

One weekend a couple weeks ago, my kids went hiking on both days. We didn’t necessarily plan to do that, but when the opportunity presented itself, I took advantage of it. At first, I wasn’t sure if my kids enjoyed doing those things on top of their regular weekend activities. After the weekend, they confirmed it was an amazing weekend.

The first day when we woke up, we ate breakfast really quickly and had an opportunity to get everyone outside. My wife took our older two kids and the dog while I got paired up with our 2 year old son L. It’s a bit difficult for him to keep pace because he marches to his own drum beat. He frequently looks off into the distance or tends to investigate things around him. When the lead pack is way ahead, I have to pick L up and run. He is a bowling ball and is very heavy. Much of the hike was this way, but at least it’s a good workout.

On the second day, we all woke up for breakfast and I made pancakes. After eating breakfast quickly, my wife needed to sleep in and I decided to take all the kids and our dog to another hike. My 7 year old daughter E and 5 year old son C wanted ice cream if they finished the hike and I said we will see. I didn’t want L getting any ice cream, so I had to solve for that.

I tried to get L to walk most of the hike. He waked about halfway, which was really good. I had to carry him the rest of the way, but at least it’s a good workout. Déjà vu. Once we finish the hike, we rushed home for lunch. I told E and C that we couldn’t get ice cream yet since I had to put L to sleep. Luckily, he went down for his nap really easily, so I took E and C for some ice cream while my wife was at home. They smashed the ice cream cones and then I rushed C to soccer afterwards.

Fast forward to that Monday, I walked E and C to school. E said her legs were so tired, but she had the best weekend ever. I think it was just good quality family time. We did so much and we’re also very active. That always makes for a great weekend and I would love to have many more of them. I’m sure everyone would too, especially if it involved ice cream.
