Self-Made Band-Aid

My 6 year old daughter E is always trying to figure out ways to save the Earth. One way she knows how to make a difference is to reuse things and make it into something else. Not only does it prevent trash from ending up in a landfill, it gives her the chance to create something new from what is around her.

One day she tells me that she has a cut on her finger. It seemed like a paper cut and wasn’t anything serious. Normally she would want a band-aid for that. I usually remind them that unless they are bleeding, you don’t need to use a band-aid because it’s a waste of resources and creates more trash for the Earth. It’s only a psychological benefit of having a band-aid on something that isn’t bleeding. It also slows healing.

E knows all of this and runs off for a while. She ended up taking some of the stuffing that fell out of her stuffed animals in the playroom and using a bunch of tape to make sure the stuffing was situated in her paper cut. She runs back to me and tells me all about her self-made band-aid. She was really proud of herself and I was proud of her too!

All things considered, it was a decent band-aid. It wouldn’t have stopped actual bleeding, but it was definitely good enough for a paper cut. I’m glad E was trying her best to also help the Earth and if we all did our part, hopefully the Earth will be a much better place for everyone.
