Playground Pickups

Now that my 5 year old son C is in kindergarten, he usually has to wait around for his 6 year old sister E to get out of school. The difference is a few minutes since the littlest ones get out the earliest. C definitely takes advantage of those minutes.

When I am lucky enough to do school pickups, C usually greets me with a hug (and occasionally skips the hug) and runs to the playground after dumping his backpack on me. He zooms around and sometimes his friends also stick around to play. It’s fine to have fun when waiting around, but when E is out, they both want to play most days. If we aren’t rushing out to an after school activity, it’s fun watching them be the kids they are…even if it takes an extra 25 minutes to get home.

Without fail, this is their daily routine and I don’t mind it at all since I want them to build good exercise habits. It’s great as kids since those things are built into their day and I wish they were the same for grownups. Until then, I’ll stick to trying to chase them down in the playground during pickups or doing some extra calf raises while watching them play.
