Making Breakfast
The mornings are usually rushed for us, with 3 kids running around the house, a needy dog, and lots of things to get done. My wife recently decided that a breakfast menu would help so our kids understand what options are available. She also emphasized there were select things they could make all on their own. Our 6 year old daughter E and 4 year old C were very excited about this over the weekend.
Unfortunately, our 1 year old son L has a fever so he wasn’t in the normal morning rush today. E and C were excited to make breakfast and wanted to rush to the kitchen. After I brushed their teeth, they zoomed into the kitchen, looked at the menu, and decided they were going to make Greek yogurt with honey for breakfast.
Ideally, that wasn’t the first thing they would decide since my wife prepared smaller boxes of cereal for them to grab. They also needed to get to the top shelf of the fridge to get the Greek yogurt, but by the time I made it to the kitchen, they had already grabbed everything. I guess that’s what we were eating for breakfast.
I gave E and C instructions and said to scoop the yogurt and then drizzle the honey over it in the bowl. The honey needed to be scooped out with the honeycomb on a stick and then you need to twirl the stick to make sure the honey doesn’t drip. I re-explained the last part over and over again and they said they understood. I’ll let you guess what went wrong.
It ended up with E drizzling honey on the table and her accidentally sticking the honey comb into the Greek yogurt. I had to pause when I was doing and wash the honeycomb on a stick. Then we had to retry everything and it was fine the next time around. Then it was C’s turn and he did all the steps correctly, probably because he got a good chance to observe.
Luckily, we finished everything on time and got out of the door. It was the first time the kids made their own breakfast. Even though there were some slight mishaps along the way, it was still really good for them to make the progress. It’s extra great that they were excited to make their own breakfast and hopefully they just keep that with them. Because they’re gonna be making a lot of their own breakfast in the future.
