School Transitions
These past few weeks have been a whirlwind. Lot’s of changes for our family with school transitions. My 6 year old daughter E was finally starting 1st grade and I can’t believe it. My 5 year old son is getting to his last day of daycare (thank goodness since my bank account can rest a bit) and starting kindergarten. They were both excited and nervous.
I was luckily enough to be able to walk E to school on the morning of her first day of 1st grade. She was really excited to go and we had met her teacher the devious day. I also got to make sure she is sitting at the front of the class since she has some trouble seeing far away with her eyesight (even with glasses). I didn’t want her to fall behind at all because of it and it made me feel relieved when her teacher moved her before her first day. E had all her school supplies with her and really wanted to dig into them, just like I did when I was a kid!
Drop-off was a bit uneventful and a bit emotional watching her walk in. It was different, yet the same. I wanted to be sure I could also pick her up from school, so I rearranged my work schedule to accommodate. When the school day was over, I grabbed E with my wife and t hen walked back with her. She was so excited to see us and she had an awesome day. She checked out a book series called Dragon Girls from the library and wanted to read that for bedtime. It was a good start to the new school year for her!
The next day, it was C’s last day of daycare. He was excited about it and also did not want to leave because it was all he has known as far as school. He also had a really good friend he didn’t want to leave, but we have their number and could meet up with for play dates. I dropped him off and it was bittersweet. The day flew by and I picked him up at the end of the day. We got to talk about his new school where he will be with his big sister. That made him excited for the new adventure! He could also come back for summer camp here, just like E!
The week was full of school transitions and it is part of the changes we all go through, but it still feels like it all moves really fast. My Mom keeps saying that when the kids are in school, life passes very fast like it did for her. It’s a lot of the same routines. Once the changes happen, it’s summer, then it’s the start of the new year and I finally feel the same way. It is important to slow things down and try to be present. I do also want to chop up the year and go do bigger family trips to sign post the passing of the time. We will get there and as long as my 1 year old son L cooperates, we can make it happen!
