Patch Time

My 7 year old daughter E needs to wear an eye patch. She has a bit of a lazy eye and the doctor said we should have her patch her other eye for around 2 hours a day to see if there is any improvement. We usually have to remind her to put it on and there hasn’t been as much progress as we would have liked.

My 5 year old son C has gotten so used to the reminders that he has gotten in on it. If we come home from school and her eye isn’t patched, he would remind her to patch it. It’s honestly helpful whenever my wife and I forget to say something about the patch. Always glad to have an extra person keeping tabs on the patch time so we can squeeze it in during the awake time.

I know it’s hard on E since it restricts her ability to see as well. She tends to not wear it because of those limitations and she also does not want to wear it at school in fear of someone making fun of her. Even though she has read books, such as Wonder with August “Auggie” Pullman, that talks about physical differences and how to handle them, it still makes her uncomfortable. The error margins left are tight because there isn’t a lot of awake time after school and activities. That’s where I’m glad that C cares so much about his big sister to remind her and more often than not, it helps us squeeze in enough patch time.
