Musical Performance Part 2

The joy of having multiple kids is that once they get into school, you end up doing very similar things clustered together. A few school days later, my 7 year old daughter E had her musical performance. She was in the first grade and her entire grade was performing with the fourth graders.

E had listened to the talks about how her 5 year old brother C was situated in the back during his performance. She wasn’t going to do the same thing. In fact, she was all the way at the front with her best friend. I’m sure even if she hadn’t listened to the talks about standing in the front, she would still be in the front because she loves performing in front of a crowd.

The fourth graders got recorders and practice really hard to play them to a bunch of songs. They also had to sing songs with the first graders. It was awesome to see all this hard work coming together. I don’t know why C did this, but he dragged his fold out chair all the way to the front even though we were all the way in the back for the performance. I guess he took being at the front too literal. It was hilarious.

E did a great job singing and had a lot of fun. We ended up playing at the playground afterwards, which is what we did at the end of C’s performance a few days ago. They had fun, but E was a bit shy to ask the older kids to play even though she really wanted to play with them. Maybe she was feeling extra shy and spent after the performance, so I didn’t use it as a teaching moment.

It was another really good time and I love having these things to go to. Something about seeing kids try their best at something makes it a great experience. It’s like reliving things that I used to do as a kid and seeing the world through their eyes. They can make something so simple as digging a hole in the beach so fun and I get to be silly with them. These are the good times of parenthood that make the screaming and whining worth it.
