Last Day Pickups

A few weeks ago, my kids had their last day of school and they were out for the summer. Usually at the end of the school year, I try my best to be sure that I’m at pick up. I love watching them come out of the school happy to see us and sometimes they do look a little sad that school is over because they really enjoy it.

This year, my 7 year old daughter E was really sad that school was ending. She would talk about it almost every day leading up to the last day because she loved her teachers and friends. The thought of not going to school for a long time and the uncertainty of second grade was making her dread the end of the school year. Luckily though as the last day of the school year came, she turned her mood around and was actually excited for the summer. We talked about new beginnings and time to reflect for the summer. Also, we would get some more quality time together, relax, and hopefully go on some adventures. That made her feel better and she came out of school with a big smile.

My 5 year old son C was always glad to get out of school. He had some ups and downs in kindergarten class. I knew school was also boring for him because he basically did kindergarten when his big sister E went through it. He was like her shadow the previous year and was ready to be free of school. C came out like a ball of energy and was having fun with his friends on the playground. When we asked if he wanted to head home or stay for the after school club, he opted to stay for one last extra long play session. He had a blast after we picked him up.

With that, the summer officially started for us. My Mom says that once the kids start school, it goes by fast. It really has been true and I can’t believe the school year flew by. At least I’m hoping things slow down a bit with summer and that we can have a good break from rushing out of the door to get to school each morning.
