Comic Book Writer
On the way to swim class a few weeks ago, my 7 year old daughter E and 5 year old son C were being really silly. They were coming up with characters on a farm and saying the craziest story with the farm animals. There were farmers trying to throw the animals on the grill, the animals escaping, and chaos everywhere (but nobody got hurt which is great for those in the story).
The star of the show was Old Uddery Cow. She was very old and very uddery. Even I couldn’t help but laugh when I first heard the character’s name. E and C would take turns telling parts of the story and at one point, there was a Grill Man (who was the bad guy) taking the chickens to…the grill (who could have guessed). The chickens pecked the Grill Man before they were thrown on the grill and my kids were having a grand time on the drive.
They asked me who my favorite character was when we got to swim class and of course I said Old Uddery Cow. They were so excited to talk about the stories and E wanted to become a comic book writer with C when they got back. It was all they could think about and they wanted to go home quickly so they could work on it. It was really cute.
That night, the two of them spent some time on the first story about the Grill Man. They made a few pages and traded turns on the illustrations. They also worked together on the twists and turns of the story. I got a first edition read through and I enjoyed the story because they worked so hard on it.
The next morning, they were at it again and wrote up another comic book. I really love it when E and C get wrapped up into something new since they love being together to work through it to learn or play. Although these phases only last a few days, I always appreciate them since it is a period of peace and playfulness in the house. It makes parenting feel fulfilling.
