Kick Board Soccer
My 5 year old son C got a kick board for soccer as a Christmas gift. My wife didn’t consult me on exactly what she was getting him after I said an indoor kicking game with lights was gimmicky. I didn’t know exactly whether the kick board would be useful for him or not when I first saw it, but an open mind is what we need more of in the world, so I kept mine open!
One weekend, we had an opening in the morning to go to the park. I asked my 7 year old daughter E if she wanted to go and she declined. C wanted to go and it was only going to be the two of us. We brought the kick board and some soccer goals to set up.
When we got to the park, I was excited to just run around and play with C. We don’t have a lot of dedicated time together since either I have multiple kids or we are doing something with a bigger group. The morning was crisp and I was happy to just be out there with him.
I set up the goals and kick board so we could play. C wanted to run back and forth across a large field dribbling the ball, so that’s what we did. We practiced some passing off of the kick board and also used the kick board as a defender. We made some sick soccer moves to get away from the defender and learned some things about how to be efficient with getting around.
We saved scrimmaging for last and C was “beating” me. He was so happy to run around and a few times he slipped really hard on the ground trying to take the ball away from me. He bounced right back up and I kept thinking to myself that I wish I was that flexible still!
After a while, it was time to go home and check on my other kids and wife. We were off and had a memory full of awesome soccer in the morning. Hopefully we can find some more time to play and C ended up loving the kick board (and so did I!).
