Dipeeeeeee

One afternoon a few weeks ago, my 2 year old son L was wrapping up lunch. As you can, imagine, he made a mess. I didn’t help that we were eating watermelon as well.

After he finished his watermelon, he wanted to eat snacks also. L is a voracious eater. Sometimes he eats more than my other two kids combined (although that is rare…but when it happens…wow!). We let him mow down the food and looked at an even bigger mess to clean.

My wife picked him up said that she was going to wash his hands, change his shirt, and change his dipeeeeeee. L looked her straight in the eye and said no dipeeeeeee. Here is the moment of true fear. You’re holding a 2 year old volatile child who just challenged what you just said.

There aren’t very many options here and you have to pick the right one to avoid the temper tantrum. My wife picked the option to question L. She asked him why he said no dipeeeeeee. With a straight face and a matter of fact tone, he said it was a diaperrrrrrrr.

We started to laugh, especially because L emphasize the ending of diaper. It’s like he was so confident in his correction and was just holding his follow through. I think everyone was also glad that there was not a lot of screaming going on. We got him changed and the huge mess cleaned up. I’ll take the parenting win and the funny story any day!
