Catching Bread

Recently, my 1 year old son L has been coming home from daycare with a full belly. They give him snacks and he sometimes eats three servings of it before calling it quits. I don’t know if the teachers love him so much that they want to see him happy or if they are scared of him throwing a huge tantrum if they cut him off. Either way, L gets what he wants.

This means that L comes home and doesn’t want to eat a real dinner. He will default to bread and fruit without eating much protein or vegetables. It’s a tough balance, but we mostly just let him pick what to eat. Not worth fighting him since he will eat the other things when he is actually hungry.

This week, L was actually upset that we wouldn’t give him more bread even though he had some on his plate. He got so upset that he threw the bread in the air and our dog actually caught it in his mouth. The bread was gone after that and it was unbelievable because we have the clumsiest dog ever. He couldn’t do that again if we all tried to set up the same scenario!

We all had a laugh except for L, who was very upset. Once he got a new bread, he was wondering where the bread he threw went. I said the dog ate it and L was trying to get out of the chair to go look for it. When we wouldn’t let him, he cried and hugged my wife. Nothing like Mommy to calm down an angry toddler. I’ll definitely miss these times looking back, but I look forward to reasoning with a slightly more understanding toddler in the future.
