Airplane Hugs

My 1 year old son L likes longer books at times when I read to him before bedtime. I noticed that he only likes longer books if they are new to him…because if they aren’t new, it gets him very sleepy (which he doesn’t like, but I do like very much). He has been into the book Where Do Airplanes Sleep at Night recently and I love reading him that book because he thinks all the small planes are him (and all the big planes are me).

There is a part of the book where they talk about airplanes hugging with their wings. He knows that almost every time I say airplane, I make one with my hands, emit a brrrrrring sound from my mouth, and soar around. He did the same one night and I landed my big plane on his and gave him a hug. He loved that and it was our nightly routine for a while.

We have since rotated into If Animals Kissed Goodnight and he is into that for his long book. Shorter books, he is back into cars, trucks, and trains. The preferences shift with the tide, but every once in a while, he will want to read Where Do Airlines Sleep at Night and we would do the special airplane hug. Those are the moments I know I’ll miss.
