The Letter O

Most nights, I get to spend time with my 1 year old son L before I put him to bed. My wife takes our other two kids and does reading time with them (more on how that has changed another time…spoiler alert…it includes cuddling both individually to sleep…). I have some quality time with L and we usually spend it in the playroom.

At night, we usually play with cars and other stuffies that he wants me to animate for him. We would also spend time reading, but since we do that when we go into the room with his crib to settle down, I tend to do other things while we are in the playroom. My wife bought a set of ABC cards with vehicles on the back of each letter and both L and his 5 year old big brother C loves them. C used it for a while to learn his letters and sounds. L is trying to just look at the vehicles and now we are practicing his letters almost every night because he thinks it is fun. Who would have thought.

Each night, I ask L what is the letter and sometimes he knows it and sometimes he doesn’t. I try to say the letters in a funny way and after he repeats it, I give him a huge high five. He loves this game and now his favorite letter is definitely O. He recognizes it everywhere, including in the number 10! Hah! His other favorite letter is R because I say it like a pirate. If he grows up saying ARRRRR, we will know why!

It’s great to be able to spend this time with him. All these little moments to teach him things and remember the learning process I love getting his little high fives after each letter he pronounces and he is now up to recognizing and saying 10 letters. Not bad for a 1 year old and definitely better than I ever knew back then. Hopefully he will learn them quickly and then we can move on to numbers so every 0 doesn’t look like an O!
