Ski Camp

My wife wanted our 7 year old daughter E and 6 year old son C to do something different in the summer. She signed them up for a week long ski camp so they could learn how to ski. To me, it’s the weirdest thing to ski indoors for the summer, but luckily the kids loved it and they were really tired at the end of the day (which is the important part!).

The ski camp gave them the basics. They understood how to ski down this carpet hill that was soft to fall on. Each day, they would practice their pizza stance and learn how to turn and stop. Over the week, they actually got really good and C was so competitive that he didn’t want to ever fall! I don’t think falling is a bad thing though since you are pushing to your limit if you are testing the bounds of your skiing ability. He was also stuck with a tougher coach one of the days, so maybe that’s why he didn’t want to fall or else the coach would end his turn!

E was excited to ski, but she was also excited about climbing this rock wall afterwards. She loved to try and get to the top with different routes and she would patiently wait her turn until they shut down the climbing wall after pickups were completed. We had to hang around there for a while until she got her climbing fix in and on the day she didn’t get a second turn during pickups, she was pretty sad. I talked to her and let her know the workers were trying their best, but they also wanted to go home for the day and tried to stick around a bit longer so everyone had some more fun. E understood that quickly and the next few days, she got all the climbing out of her system!

They both had such a good time that we signed them up for the winter ski camp. It is easier to ski on real snow (or so they say) and hopefully that is true! I can’t wait to go with them to see how they do. I’m also excited about finally getting out there myself since it has been a long time for me to be able to ski. A lot of the things I did got cut when E was first born because the priority was her, and then C came along with our 2 year old son L that followed a few years later. We sacrificed many different things so they could get the time and attention while they grew, but as they are growing up, the spurts of free time are emerging again. It’s like a tide right now that goes in and out and I’m trying to enjoy it as much as possible…and squeezing in a few runs can only help!
