Hugh School Reunion

My wife had a high school reunion she was helping to prepare for. At first, I was off the hook and didn’t need to attend. After a while and as the date of the reunion got closer, it turns out my attendance was required.

We ended up getting her parents to watch our three kids. It was the first time we were going to be out without any of the kids in a long time. I was a little bit worried because if we stayed at the high school reunion too long, it would cut into the bedtime routine we needed to do for the kids. The goal was to just do a quick in and out so we can pick up the kids and go home.

When we drop the kids off, our 1 year old son L ended up, crying a lot. He doesn’t like it when he sees the people that he loves leave him. He was screaming really loudly, but we had to get out of there. When we got to the reunion, we had to set things up. By we, I mean, my wife and the other folks. They ended up setting up really quickly, and since it was going to be a miserable event, I thought I would start to drink early with the others.

I ended up talking to a few people and tried to make the event as fun as it could be. I didn’t eat much, but I was drinking quite a bit. My wife had to work the check-in table and we were supposed to leave after her shift was done. For some reason, we did not leave. This meant that I was going to be there even longer and I had some more drinks because of it.

We ended up staying until the end even though my wife had a ton of social anxiety heading into the reunion. Also, I hadn’t drank like that in a long time. I usually never drink, especially with the kids around. I do have the superpower of never getting a hangover, so when I do get to drink, I make sure it’s worth it. What I didn’t count for was the fact that when the night stopped, sometimes everything hits at one time. My lovely wife was the one who got the kids, drove us all home, and got them ready for bed.

I ended up laying down in the playroom and was trying to just hold it together. It was going fine and I got ready for bed, but all of a sudden things didn’t end up pretty. Ended up having to clean up the mess and was really regretting my decisions. Luckily, I was able to sleep after things were cleaned up and by the time I woke up, I still did not have a hangover so that superpower was intact. My wife was really tired from preparing for the event and dealing with the kids, so she slept in while I dealt with the kids in the morning. I was really tired myself, but I had to rally and ended up making the kids some waffles and playing with them. I made sure to drink lots of coffee also.

When my wife woke up, she made a few comments about how much I drank, and some of my not so great decisions (something that hasn’t happened in almost a decade). We had a good laugh, and the life of a parent is really difficult because there’s truly no breaks. No matter what happens, the kids are going need you and you’re going to need to rally. Thank goodness it doesn’t take me that much to rally and it turned into a funny memory for us to laugh at down the road.
