Duck Costume Vol. 3
We have had a duck costume since my 7 year old daughter E was a toddler. That was her second costume after a pig onesie that was her first Halloween costume. That duck costume, which also happens to be a onesie, made it to my 5 year old son L and finally, my 1 year old son L discovered it. It has been by his side for almost every day during a long stretch.
I don’t know why he took a liking to it. It wasn’t particularly cold, so that thick duck costume onesie wouldn’t have helped in that department. It also wasn’t Halloween and he didn’t like animals as much as cars. My guess is that the bright colors and the novelty of the costume is what he loved about it. Even if that was the case, I don’t know why he wanted that duck costume with him all the time.
L wore it around the house and ran around it in, which was really cute. He still has a little waddle when he ran, so the duck tail would shake. What was not cute was when he didn’t have it around him and whined about it. He also insisted that it stay near him while eating…and he is not a neat eater. I sometimes had to convince him to put the duck costume to the side and pry it away from him if he didn’t listen. That did not end well when I did that, but my rule is no toys or other things around when eating. Those things are distractions and would get so dirty with how my kids eat. That was the yin and yang of the duck costume.
Eventually, L lost interest in the duck costume after an extended period of time. We were able to tuck it away and he hasn’t asked about it in a long time. I’m glad we are past that phase, even if I can’t see him waddle when running down the hallway in it. Some things are best left to once a year during Halloween!
