Daycare Test

My one-year-old son L is almost at a point where he is starting daycare. It has been a long journey until this point, but it was mostly enjoyable more than miserable. Although some days it was a close race between those two emotions. We needed to bring him and drop him off for about 30 minutes to see how he would adjust to his new surroundings. It was a big day for him and for all of us.

My wife and I ended up bringing him to daycare while also dropping off our four-year-old son C. C gladly ran into his class to enjoy the last few days with his friends there and it was time to drop L off. We went back upstairs and signed him in. As we walked in the room, we saw that the other kids in the class were huge. The teacher reminded us that they were a bit past two years old and that’s why they were transitioning out while younger toddlers were transitioning in. L was going to be one of those kids that was transitioning in.

I was curious to see how drop off would work and my wife ended up sneaking out first. I distracted L with a bus and he gladly played with it. Then I ended up slowly, sneaking out after spending a few minutes there. He didn’t cry when he realized he was there in class with strangers. The teacher ended up holding him for a while because I think he was a bit nervous.

During those 30 minutes, my wife was really hungry so we ended up getting something to eat. It was a really early lunch for me too. We had to quickly turn back around and go back to the daycare after getting our food. I was a little bit nervous to see how things went and I know my wife was anxious to learn too.

When we got to the daycare, L seemed fine. He was in the teacher’s arms, and even though there was another boy that was crying next to them, it was L that was being held. That was really funny to see. I also felt bad for that boy that was crying. The teacher told us that L did great. He didn’t end up crying at all and hopefully he has a good first day in a few weeks. As for the other crying boy, he ended up getting picked up by the teacher as she was talking to us and all was well there.

I’m glad the daycare test and visit went well. It gives me a little bit of confidence to know that L is going to do well in class. Even though the day will be much longer for him, I think the new environment will end up providing a lot more stimulation for him. He’s such a curious boy and I’m sure he’s going to have fun exploring and doing new things. I hope he is also pretty social, although most of the other kids in class won’t know how to talk. It would be pretty funny to watch them try to interact. Fingers crossed that everything goes well and today was a step in the right direction.
