Building the Crib

It was finally time to sleep train my one year-old son L. My wife and I have been putting off this moment for a while. It was our last baby and I knew she wanted to enjoy co-sleeping as long as possible. I also enjoyed cuddling with him to make sure he fell asleep for his naps and at night time.

I needed to build a crib and it took a while to find most of the parts to put the crib together. Lucky for me, I was missing one of the screws that held the bottom part of the frame to the post on one side. Everything else came together fine and I left the crib there as is.

The crib was the one that we used for our 4 year old son C. He was excited to see the crib again and so was L. L wanted to get inside the crib and I picked him up and placed him down. He immediately started to smile and jumped up and down. I think he had a little bit of fun and I wanted him to have a positive association with the crib.

We didn’t start to sleep training that day because of the missing bolt, so I ended up trying to find a replacement bolt at the hardware store, but I was unsuccessful. It made sense to start the next day and in the morning, both C and L were playing as usual. Somehow, C ended up climbing into the crib and figuring out how to get his little brother L into the crib as well. By the time I got back into the room, they were both in there quietly laying down and playing. It was a sweet, but puzzling moment! I still don’t really know how they both got in there!

Sleep training will be really hard. I was dreading having to do this since L is much older than when we sleep train the other two kids. We sleep train the other two kids when they were around six months old. This seems like a really big change, but I know that once we get through it, everyone will get much better sleep. It’s also something that needs to be done because L is going to start daycare in a few weeks. He needs to learn how to nap by himself. Fingers crossed that sleep training goes well.
