Bring Your Kids to Work Day
Recently, there was an opportunity to bring my kids to work. They were really excited to see where I started to work, and since things were slow, I decided to take the leave and bring them. I didn’t know what to expect, and the fact that they were so excited meant that there was extra pressure for me to make sure that they had fun. Luckily, my wife and our one year-old son L weren’t going to tagalong, so it made getting around a lot easier.
We had a late start than usual and it took a while to head into work. By the time we got there, it was really busy and hectic. I had to get them checked in and we ended up meeting one of my friends up and chatting. She got to meet my kids and my kids had fun putting and playing with her dog. Then it was off to grab an early lunch before they got extremely cranky.
During lunch, they barely ate. That was fine and I made sure that they ate their popcorn snack and the cookie that they got. At least they had some snacks in them to last most of the afternoon. We ended up making some bracelets so they could remember the event and did a dance party. Surprisingly, they had a lot of fun even though we had too quickly get in and out.
There was also bubble making outside before we ended up leaving my work. They were really excited to make bubbles and we waited in line. E ended up getting to go first. She was obviously having a lot of fun making bubbles and holding the bubble wand with some rope. You had to swing it in a certain motion to make bubbles and she eventually figured it out. Once she got the hang of it, she didn’t want to let it go, but I had to encourage her to let C go. There was also other kids waiting, so I was trying to hustle my kids.
Once C got the bubble wand and rope, he was just flailing them about. I think he was just having fun, or so I thought. What was actually going on was that he was experimenting. He actually had a really unique momentum to his swings. Instead of large swings, he was just oscillating the bubble wand and wrote back-and-forth very quickly. It ended up making a ton of large bubbles. I was shocked and couldn’t whip out my phone in time to catch him making all of those bubbles. It was awesome. Some of the kids behind him ended up learning from him and I saw them pick up the bubble one and rope as we were walking away and doing the same thing. That kid has his own style. He’s amazing.
We ended up leaving that event and I asked them how they liked it. They had so much fun apparently and they couldn’t wait to do it again. Even though we were only there for a short period of time and I felt like we only did a few small activities, it was enough for them. They got to hang out with daddy at work and enjoy some time together. That put a smile to my face and I’m glad I ended up getting a chance to do that with them.
