Birthday Birthday

I now have a 5 year old son, C. I honestly can’t believe it. It’s already crazy that his 6 year old sister E is growing up so quickly. Now he’s right up there with her.

I wanted to remember to say happy birthday to him the first time I saw him in the morning. I ended up getting up early because my wife’s iPhone was messed up and I was the alarm clock. We all needed to get out of the door early, so I made sure I was up early. When I saw C come out of the room, I said good morning and didn’t think hard enough because I was on auto pilot doing the morning routine. After I thought about it for a few seconds, I screamed happy birthday to him. His face lit up.

By the time we were ready, he went in there to see his Mommy and his 1 year old little brother L. He got a happy birthday from his Mommy and a confused look from his little brother (probably because they usually have a lot of early playtime, but we were rushing out of the door already). C got to pick breakfast and chose mini waffles. It was the frozen kind and I’m sure it’s loaded with a decent amount of sugar, but it’s his birthday and he is a carb monster. He needs carbs because he is always running around!

I made sure to remember the ice cream for his birthday so that his friends at summer camp could also celebrate with him. He was looking forward to ice cream, but in the middle of the day, the teachers messaged me and said that since the ice cream may contain nuts, they couldn’t serve it to the kids. They got birthday Oreos, and he also had a birthday twin that gave out some goodie bags. C always loves goodie bags.

By the time I went to go pick him up, it looked like he had a great day at summer camp. I hustled home with him and L so that we could hang out as a family. There was a big surprise, waiting for him and when he walked into the kitchen, there was a huge helium balloon with the number five on it and tons of different books and Legos that he wanted. I also got him a Pokémon coloring set that he could easily close up as a briefcase and carry it around with him (luckily that was on sale for $11 on Amazon somehow).

He was really happy to see all the things that we got for him. Mostly I think he just appreciates the attention being on him. I think he loves having his birthday and I really enjoy seeing him so happy. We ended up seeing happy birthday after dinner and having a little bit of cake. We spent the evening building the Legos he got and honestly I’m surprised my wife got him such a huge set. They already have a lot of Lego Duplo blocks, but I guess you slap STEM on it and the parents will descend!

It was mostly a good day and the end of a long week for me and my wife. Thank goodness we made it come together for C and I know he had a great day. I hope he remembers how much everyone loves him (even his teachers say he is a favorite at school), and that nothing changes when it isn’t his birthday…except just the no cake a presents part!
